A Place to Bury Strangers

Track: Keep Slipping Away
Artist: A Place to Bury Strangers
Album: Exploding Head
Genre: Shoegaze, Post-Punk
Similar Artists: Joy Division, Skywave, The Jesus and Mary Chain

My buddy showed me this band:
"imagine Joy Division, but noisy."
He was pretty accurate. This is what I would imagine a live Joy Division show being like.

Njiqahdda

Track: Saavolungaat
Artist: Njiqahdda
Album: Yrg Alms
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal/Post-Rock
Similar Artists: Walknut, Skagos

More atmospheric black metal that helps me get to sleep. A shiny new dollar to whoever can tell me how to begin attempting the pronunciation of "Njiqahdda." The drumming keeps everything interesting (like Walknut.) I really enjoy what they did with the vocals.

Daughters

Track: The Virgin
Artist: Daughters
Album: Daughters
Genre: Hardcore, Noise
Similar Artists: The Locust, Wolf Parade, As the Sun Sets

Very vocal dependent. They'll either be your thing or they wont be. They're my thing.
One of my favourite albums of 2010.

Sounds Like: Walknut

--> Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ytrtroxamx1

Yeah, I've been on a bit of a Québécois music kick lately.
I have no words for this band, other than that they're amazing. This is one of those bands that I should have listened to ages ago. I'm kicking myself for not picking up this album when I was in Montréal.

Current 93

Track: Lucifer over London
Artist: Current 93
Album: Lucifer over London EP
Genre: Neofolk
Similar Artists: Death in June, Sol Invictus, Black Sabbath, Coil

I love David Tibet's voice so much. I cannot believe that people continually praise Dead (that there happy-chap of a former Mayhem vocalist) for his "possessed" vocal quality while David Tibet still breathes.

"Twisted wings and clouds unfold in the great gape of he-who-fell. . ."

Insect Warfare

Track: Manipulator
Artist: Insect Warfare
Album: World Extermination
Genre: Grindcore
Similar Artists: Phobia, Pretty Little Flower, Pig Destroyer (early)

A lengthy, by grind standards, slab of archetypal grindcore at its best. Surprisingly enough, speed and grind-fuckyness are not stressed as much as the development of the riffs and vocal placement, although that is not to say that the drummer cannot blast like a chaingun.

Their 8-or so minute EP, At War with Grindcore, is also stellar. It brings the grind-fuckyness.

Throw it on and dance around: http://www.mediafire.com/?mykqj2z3zmc

Miserere Luminis

Track: Miserere Luminis
Artist: Miserere Luminis
Album: Miserere Luminis
Genre: Atmospheric black metal/depressive black metal
Similar Artists: Gris, Sombres Forêts, Sui Caedere

--> Download:http://www.mediafire.com/?rq3vmdbmwmn

Lately I've been on a bit of a Québecois black metal kick...it started after I returned from Montréal from the Monarque show last weekend.

I'm disappointed that I never got to see Miserere Luminis play live, and I will never get the chance to because the band exists no more.

Regardless, I'm really loving their self-titled album. It has a very introspective quality to it.

Menace Ruine

Track: The Die is Cast
Artist: Menace Ruine
Album: The Die is Cast
Genre: Drone/experimental/noise
Similar Artists: Aderlating, Gnaw Their Tongues

--> Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?om4lmdnnlxm

This is one of those bands that for me personally, is strange but likeable. The eerie vocals and synthesizers create this atmosphere of tension and unease.

Still, what I wouldn't give to see this band play a live show....on a side note, they've just released a new EP called Sigil Sessions.

Bone Awl

Track: Show Me
Artist: Bone Awl
Album: Meaningless Leaning Mess
Genre: Raw Black Metal / Punk
Similar Artists: Ildjarn, Vordr

Do you like static? I like static. I wish I could see them live. They actually tour, surprisingly enough. The vocals remind me a lot of some grindcore bands actually, especially Pig Destroyer.

Father Befouled

Track: Sacrilegious Defilement Of Deranged Salvation
Artist: Father Befouled

One of my favourite albums this year.

Watain

Track: Midnight Possession
Artist: Watain
Album: Go Fuck Your Jewish "God"
Genre: Black Metal
Similar Artists: Dissection, Funeral Mist, 1349

I'm picking up ticket to see Watain this weekend. They apparently stink up the venue with their post-sacrifice corpse paint. I've always been a fan of this kind of production, although I am partial to their more recent album as well--especially Casus Luciferi.

Negură Bunget

Track:Dedesuptul

Album: Marrow of the Spirit
Genre: Atmospheric black metal/folk/doom metal
Similar Artists: Drudkh, Alcest

The last chapter of Deathspell Omega's album trilogy that encompasses "Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice" and "Fas – Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum."

A wonderfully varied album that really showcases Deathspell Omega's musical capabilities.
Especially recommended as an introduction to their work.

Sarke

Darkthrone's Nocturnal Culto is in another band.
They're pretty good at bringing the old school in the vein of Celtic Frost.
Fans of Darkthrone and first wave era Black Metal should find them worth checking out.

I'll upload album links shortly, when I'm more familiar with them

1349

Track: Sculptor of Flesh
Artist: 1349
Album: Hellfire
Genre: Black Metal
Similar Artists: Satyricon, Marduk, Gorgoroth

--> Album Download Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?u11mguyxbc2

I saw 1349 live last week. They were playing with Tom Warrior's (celtic frost) new band, Triptykon, who were equally amazing. I got to meet Tom Warrior (coolest) and Frost (again) and they both signed my jacket. I HAVE FROST'S SIGNATURE ON A FUCKING DRUMSTICK. If only I played the drums. . .I was sort of the drummer for my school band back in the day, but I was never allowed to play because of my sick Minor Threat-esque fills.

1349 played this song, right before closing with Atomic Chapel off their new album. Needless to say, I couldn't hold my neck up for a few days.

"Do you hear them calling. . .from beyond?"

Autopsy [2]

I might post the new Autopsy EP if I like it enough. I've only had the chance to listen through it once in its entirety, but it made a good first impression. The productions could have been filthier, but I never really expected a Severed Survival clone. Nevertheless, the productions job is by no means bad; the riffs capture that old school vibe; and the vocals are powerful. The vocals are produced slightly differently--and at some times remind me of the Swedish black metal band Shining--which could put some off this otherwise quite accessible slab of gore-laden filth.

Autopsy

Track:
Twisted Mass of Burnt Decay/In the Grip of Winter
Artist: Autopsy
Album: Mental Funeral
Genre: Old-School Death Metal
Sounds Like: Possessed, Incantation, Abscess

--> Album Download Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?5y2tknkimjn

Essential old school death metal, doom metal influences and all. Imagine Darkthrone playing My Dying Bride covers. Production is stellar.

Take note of the scream towards the end of In the Grip of Winter. The next full track on the album is also excellent.

Track: Severed Survival
Artist: Autopsy
Album: Severed Survival
Genre: Old School Death Metal
Sounds Like: Possessed, Death, Repulsion

--> Album Download Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?yqlmzunnwtu

Autopsy's debut album features a rawer production job and vocals reminiscent of Scream Bloody Gore-Era Death. Severed Survival is thrashier than Autopsy's sophomore effort, making it my favourite of the two. The lyrics somehow manage to escape the hilarious, sterile nature of death metal poetry by focusing on storytelling and well timed delivery rather than relentlessly pursuing the shock factor, although they were probably pretty twisted for 89'.

"Stranded alone on a barren island
No food to be found
Point of desperation
Shocking desicion on how to survive
Now it's time to break out the knife
First inscion the cut is complete
First source of food is one of your feet
Incredible pain as you cauterize the wound
Preparing yourself for a horrible doom"

Gristleizer

This pedal/self-oscillating magic machine will be shipped to me soon. It's safe to say that I am rather excited. I should probably also mention that it's a recreation of the Gristleizer--a device designed and used by the artist Throbbing Gristle.

Suffocation

Track: Thrones of Blood
Artist: Suffocation
Album: Pierced from Within
Genre: Brutal, Technical Death Metal
Sounds Like: Defeated Sanity, Immolation, Deeds of Flesh, Decrepit Birth

Br00tal slamz, top notch death metal production, mind-boggling riffs, and perfectly executed drumming. A perfect synthesis of technicality and intensity.

Fast, angry, and fun as hell. Megadeth's debut sounds like the primal adolescent fury and jealousy fueled one-upmanship Megadave is known for. I am also currently reading Megadeth frontman, Dave Mustaine's, autobiography (that's right, a book about Megadave), and to my surprise it's actually very well written, and quite humerous at times.

". . .he likes to pour A1 Steak Sauce on my pussy before giving me head. . .he was a skinny little vanilla-pudding, peter-pan looking motherfucker."

I'm about 150 pages in an have just finished the part which details the writing process of this album (well, more about how they blew half their budget within the first day on burgers and heroin in order to 'get well'.) Funny, funny stuff.

I am ridiculously excited for this concert, especially for Immolation.
They're playing the Mod Club (Toronto) on October 4th.
Come on, October.
